FTSE 250-listed Spectris is a leading provider of high-tech precision measurement instruments, equipment and software that’s used by customers to analyse data and improve performance. In 2022, the Group successfully completed a four-year strategy cycle, simplifying and refocusing the business through disposals, and restructuring into two divisions: Spectris Scientific and Spectris Dynamics. In October 2022, the Group set out its new Strategy for Sustainable Growth and set new performance targets in place.

We worked with Spectris to simplify and streamline its 2022 report, refresh the Group’s visual identity throughout and ensure the document was as screen friendly as possible. This was about setting out the next phase of the Group’s strategic evolution – its Strategy for Sustainable Growth – and showing how Spectris is delivering on its purpose by tackling key customer challenges. Key to this was developing and integrating the Group’s sustainability narrative and performance reporting.

We designed the report to optimise content accessibility, using rules and key lines to separate columns and add structure to text-heavy pages. Key words were highlighted in headlines and standfirsts to strengthen the ‘fast read’.

The brand’s signature dark purple was held in reserve to highlight important content elements (i.e. the strategy pillars, the S172 statement, values, the risk management framework, and the case studies). For contrast, tints of the brand colours were used more liberally to bring freshness to the design, holding key content and providing contrast and accent in infographics.

The strategic report was restructured to deliver a clear and concise narrative flow. Market trends were explained ahead of the Chief Executive’s review to provide context for the new strategy, with quantification of the growth associated with the Group’s major markets included to highlight the scale of the strategic opportunity.

The Group’s new Strategy for Sustainable Growth followed, with the associated targets and a balanced set of financial and non-financial KPIs. The contents page was designed with pullouts to highlight the focus areas of strategy, sustainability and the Spectris Foundation. The ‘at a glance’ section was redesigned to show the simplified structure of the Group and present key operating performance measures.

The business review was also streamlined: the overall length of the report was reduced significantly, without compromising the content, design or overall readability.

Our shared ambition for the website was to create a dynamic and visually-led platform that better expresses how Spectris shapes progress around the world.

The resulting website maximises visual impact to create an altogether more memorable user experience. The site creative incorporates ambient video, animation, scrolling effects and a new, ownable photography style that work together to position Spectris as a leading partner for innovation in measurement technology.
