READ TIME: 4 MINS
Your corporate report needn’t be a one-and-done document. Here, Sustainability Consultant Emily Bird explains how extending its lifespan can deliver ROI all year round.
Your annual report is published once a year. But your audiences, and the AI systems answering their questions, are looking all year for the information it contains. Treat the report as a single document and its value is capped past the reporting season. Treat it as a system by repurposing its content across different channels and formats throughout the year, and it keeps working to deliver ROI long after publication.
The human subjectivity bias
LLMs are not objective and were never intended to be. Generative AI systems are designed to respond like humans, replying to queries based on what wider populations say, often drawing on user-driven sites like Wikipedia and Reddit, rather than prioritising reputable ‘owned’ sources such as company websites and social channels. Amplifying content across channels, formats and timescales increases its ‘surface area’, making it more likely that AI will treat it as trusted content, worth resharing.
The majority of searches now end without a click, meaning 78%* of users are taking Chat GPT’s (and other LLMs’) responses and opinions at face value, without checking its sources. With AI emerging as a critical influencer, communications strategies need to adapt to the needs of audiences and the AI systems that influence them.
AI the middleman
Because AI is acting as a proxy audience – interpreting content, forming opinions and representing your business to human audiences – a rethink is needed about how to make your communications more effective. Rather than having single hero assets, it’s time to look at increasing the surface area of your content. By repeating your key messages, proof points and stories consistently across your website and social channels, you increase the probability that they, rather than Reddit, become the source of information about you that LLMs turn to first – the more instances they of see your content, the more likely they are to treat it as credible. Doing this means that when your audiences ask LLMs about your business, they are more likely to receive the up-to-date, accurate content you want them to see.
And taking a more consistent communications approach will also help you reach your critical human audiences more effectively: delivering consistent key messages regularly will help them stick.

Signed, sealed, undelivered
Done well, the Annual Report is a business’s single source of truth, containing the most critical key messages, rich stories, assured data and Board-approved content. Unfortunately, if that content is locked within a PDF, it’s not optimised for AI. This makes its use somewhat limited post-publication. And when the audience’s primary intermediary can’t even access it, we’re creating a significant gap between what we’re saying and what’s being heard. We need to think differently about how to amplify that valuable information.
Designing for a system, not a single purpose
Rather than viewing the report as a document with one purpose, our approach repositions it as the driver within a communications system. By lifting content directly from the report, we can shape it into different assets that can be published across channels, throughout the year. A quote in your sustainability section could become a quote card to publish on LinkedIn, highlight data could be transformed into a YouTube animation, market analysis could be expanded to a thought leadership series.

Why it’s an easy win
The annual report is every business’s most critical, but underused, communications tool. The content is scrutinised, the numbers are assured and the key messages are aligned to your business strategy. The hard part is already done, the material just needs to work harder. We can use it to create a content system that’s already been signed off at the highest level. Delivering consistent, repeated messages and accurate data for your audiences – whether through AI, your website, social media or directly in your report – maximises the chances that they will hear what your business is saying.
Like what you hear?
